appleton primary SCHOOL

The new foundation stage classroom was the first project between Jessop & Cook Architects and Appleton School. The school had inadequate facilities for the growing number of children at the school. With this in mind, Jessop & Cook were appointed to design a new purpose built foundation stage classroom which linked to the existing 1970s building.

The new classroom was built to exceed building regulation standards as a conscious decision to improve the building performance and environmental credentials. The project included extensive external landscaping, such as large play areas, soft landscaping and a car park. A number of design features were integrated to encourage play, including an internal built playhouse and low level child friendly inglenook windows.

Following the new foundation stage classroom project, the school approached Jessop & Cook again with a small project to provide new WCs and outdoor play space for the year 1 class. The school was having issues with safeguarding and the number of toilets per pupil, which made its delivery in a very short timescale essential.

Following negotiations with the contractor early, the project was completed in time for the new term. All projects with Appleton Primary School were built partly during term time and partly during the holidays, which involved additional management of safeguarding and general health and safety.
