Cardiac Research Centre - University of Oxford

The new Cardiac Science Research Centre for the University of Oxford extends the existing Physiology Department, providing a new entrance, additional research laboratories and office accommodation. The brief demanded a landmark building, but located on the edge of the historic University Parks, the nature of the site also demanded a sensitive design solution.

The four storey glazed entrance incorporates lightweight curved cladding and a brise-soleil to provide a distinctive new facade in contrast with the original 1930’s building. This tower brings natural light deep into the centre of the building and accommodates a light open tread feature staircase, which rises up through the space.

The building has helped to create a distinct identity for the Cardiac Research Department. Researchers in this field, who were previously spread across many sites, can now benefit from being able to work together in this purpose built facility.
