Jessop and Cook Architects worked with the school to develop proposals for the site. In parallel with the design for the school, we were asked to work up proposals for a housing development on part of the existing school site. We were successful in obtaining full planning permission for the construction of 15 new 2-bedroom houses and for the conversion of the existing victorian school into a 4-bedroom house. The sale of this land to a small housing developer, helped to meet the cost of the school redevelopment project.

The proposed new school buildings and landscaping works were designed to be sympathetic in both scale and materials to the existing single storey school buildings whilst creating their own new striking identity. Timber cladding was used to visually reinforce the school’s rural setting, whilst the coloured render helps to create a fun and friendly children’s environment.

This project was awarded the RIBA Ibstock Downland Prize for Education in 2006.
