Elliot o’brien // apprentice in architecture

BA (Hons)

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN AT JESSOP AND COOK ARCHITECTS AND WHAT PROJECTS DO YOU WORK ON?

I joined Jessop and Cook in 2020 and I am an apprentice in architecture. Through Oxford Brookes University, I will become qualified through this exciting new route into the profession.

I work on a range of projects including residential, educational, and commercial projects.

WHAT SPECIFIC AREAS ARE YOU INTERESTED IN DEVELOPING WITHIN JESSOP AND COOK ARCHITECTS?

As an Apprentice, I juggle R&D projects at the university alongside my day-to-day architectural workload.

My research investigates how our built environment can improve people's health and wellbeing by creating human-centric spaces and increasing people’s involvement within the architectural design process. This research has taken me to experimenting with technologies such as Virtual Reality and Artificial Intelligence. My research has even led to a research proposal that I presented to the Ministry of Defence, and I am now applying for a DASA (Defence and Security Acceleration) Government research grant for continued research.

I also act as Jessop & Cook Architects representative for the ‘Architects’ Mental Wellbeing Forum’ as a supporting practice, finding ways to improve mental wellbeing within the construction industry.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING IN YOUR SPARE TIME?

Outside the office I enjoy spending time exercising and being outdoors. This includes camping, trekking, kayaking, going to the gym and training in MMA.
