Lauriston Housing Development
The project brings high quality contemporary housing to the centre of Basingstoke. The scheme provides 64 mixed tenure flats arranged within four separate blocks on a narrow urban site. Flats were designed to be compliant with the latest design guides and standards of best practice such as Lifetime Homes and the Housing Corporation Scheme Development Standards.
The arrangement of the blocks in terraced streets opening into small courtyards has been designed to allow good surveillance, and to maximise sunlight within the site. The result is an attractive sequence of shared external spaces.
The architecture is based on a simple palette of materials, with restrained elegant façades and simple robust detailing. Materials were chosen for long life, low maintenance and high quality. The design included the encouragement for use of public transport, permeable paving, highly insulated building envelope and passive ventilation system.
